Key information about SolarEdge power optimisers

Power optimisers maximise the electricity output of solar installations. Solar modules are connected in series in one or more strings, which means that the output of a single module can be affected by the weakest cell or the poorest condition of the entire system. The entire installation is therefore only as good as the weakest link in the chain.

SolarEdge power optimisers solve this problem. Each power optimiser monitors and optimises a single module – or, depending on the installation, two modules. Optimised modules thus achieve their maximum energy yield, regardless of whether other modules are shaded or damaged. The power optimisers monitor factors such as voltage, current and temperature, and determine the optimal power range.

Another advantage of power optimisers is that they also enable remote monitoring and fault detection, thereby preventing prolonged downtime. S-series power optimisers are equipped with Sense Connect. This technology detects the risk of arcing and reduces the voltage in good time to protect the PV system from damage. The position of the faulty connector is displayed on the system’s monitoring platform to avoid lengthy searches at string level.

Key information about SolarEdge inverters and battery storage systems

SolarEdge offers a wide range of inverters for both domestic and commercial use. The inverters are available in single-phase or three-phase versions, with power ratings ranging from less than 3 kVA to 100 kVA. SolarEdge also offers battery storage systems for domestic use.

HD-Wave: Units featuring HD-Wave technology rely on digital processes rather than magnetic components and cooling elements. This enables SolarEdge to build compact, lightweight and highly efficient inverters.

Home Hub / Home Wave: Inverters featuring this technology can be used as energy managers in a smart home. Among other things, they control electricity generation, battery storage, backup operation and wallboxes. Home Hub inverters are three-phase, whilst Home Wave inverters are single-phase.

SetApp: An app for installers to commission inverters. The app establishes a local Wi-Fi connection between the inverter and a smartphone, after which the firmware can be updated and the device commissioned.

Which battery storage systems are compatible with SolarEdge inverters?

Primarily SolarEdge’s own storage systems. Battery storage systems from LG and BYD are also compatible (as of 26 June). Please refer to our storage overview for further details.

Which inverters are compatible with SolarEdge storage systems?

SolarEdge storage systems are currently only compatible with SolarEdge inverters. (As at 26 June).

Which wallbox is compatible with SolarEdge?

Wallboxes with a signal input or enable contact are compatible with all inverters, including those from SolarEdge. Wallboxes with dynamic surplus charging are only compatible if both the wallbox and the inverter have the appropriate interfaces. SolarEdge inverters usually have RS485 and Ethernet integrated; depending on the model, Wi-Fi, ZigBee or GSM may also be available as options. Some wallboxes are designed for use with specific inverters or management systems. These are often products from full-service providers. Please refer to our e-mobility overview for further details.

How many modules per string?

The number of modules that can be installed per string depends on the inverter and the module power rating. With single-phase Home Wave inverters, between 8 and 25 SolarEdge Smart Modules can be installed. With three-phase SolarEdge Home inverters, the figure is 9 to 50. Different strings can be configured differently, but the difference in power output between the strings must not exceed 2,000 W.
